Sworn Translation for Driving Licence Exchange (DGT)

Non-EU nationals living in Spain who want to exchange their foreign driving licence for a Spanish one.

Exchanging a non-EU driving licence for a Spanish one through the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) requires a sworn translation of your foreign licence. The translation must be carried out by a MAEC-appointed sworn translator and is one of the mandatory documents in the canje de permiso de conducir process.

When sworn translation is needed

  • When applying for a canje de permiso de conducir at the DGT.
  • When your country has a bilateral agreement with Spain for licence exchange.
  • When the DGT requests a certified translation as part of the application.

About apostille

A driving licence typically does not require apostille before translation. However, the DGT may request additional documents depending on your country. Always check the DGT's current requirements.

Requirements depend on the authority and the specific case. Always check the official instructions from the authority handling your procedure. Traducet provides sworn translation — we cannot determine whether your document also needs apostille or legalisation.
